Hello, This core screening was for the Chicago School application. I made a mistake with my information and they were able to inform me of this mistake quickly. Even when I was not able to fix it myself, it was fixed by my school.

Why College and University Background Screening Matters in 2026

College and University Background Screening: A Growing Priority

College and university background screening has become a foundational element of campus safety, compliance, and student readiness. As higher education institutions face increasing regulatory oversight and evolving expectations around equity and transparency, having a compliant and efficient screening process is more important than ever.

From admissions and clinical placements to faculty hiring and volunteer onboarding, colleges and universities must ensure their screening programs protect campus communities while supporting student success.

Technology’s Role in Modern Screening Programs

Today’s college and university background screening solutions leverage technology to improve efficiency and transparency. Key benefits include:

These tools help administrators manage high screening volumes without increasing administrative workload.

Frequently Asked Questions About College and University Background Screening

Most schools use the most comprehensive requirement to build a single package for students in the program.  This way the school does not need to cross reference which student has completed which check or drug screen.

Higher education institutions must comply with the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) if they use a third-party screening agency.

The screening process and legal requirements (like the FCRA) are the same for both. The difference lies in the scope of the check, which may vary by program. CoreScreening can assist you in creating a custom package based your program’s and/or clinical requirements.

Most institutions re-run the background check and drug screen annually.  Ultimately, criminal background checks are only as good as the day they were performed so it is important to establish a policy that works best for your program.

Yes, we offer streamlined medical document tracking with review services that take hours of administrative duties off of your team.  Contact us for more information.

No. Core Screening is fully integrated with Quest and LabCorp, allowing students to select their preferred collection site and present their donor passport electronically. Students simply show the electronic donor passport along with a valid driver’s license to the collection site staff to complete their drug test.

The most common background checks for colleges and universities include a nationwide database, county or state level criminal history search, an identity verification (SSN trace), national sex offender registry search, abuse registry checks and a 9-panel drug screen.  These requirements may vary based on clinical requirements, so we encourage you to review your clinical agreements prior to finalizing the package that suits your program’s needs.

The final decision rests with the institution, not the background check provider. Corescreening’s platform provides users with the ability to accept or reject candidates directly within the background check report, based on their school’s policies.
